The Mi-25 Squadron of IAF, a part of Indian Aviation Contingent based at Goma in DRC, created a record of sorts on 19 Jul 06 when it completed 1000 hrs of flying in just 10 months of their induction. The sqn operates Mi-25 attack helicopters, and is commanded by Wg Cdr M C Mishra. The squadron nicknamed “VIPERS” is engaged in peacekeeping operations in this country troubled by internal strife and turmoil.
Almost all the missions have been flown against armed militia men who are the main impediment to the peace process. The squadron has had its share of close calls, wherein its helicopters have been hit by militiamen’s bullets on five different occasions. In one instance the bullet passed just two inches from the pilot’s head and another bullet punctured the fuel and hydraulic pipelines. However, this has only made the ‘VIPERS’ whose motto is, LETHAL WHEN PROVOKED, more determined to make the militia see reason. Due to their continued onslaught a large number of militia, 3951 in the past two months, have surrendered and joined the peace process. The squadron’s attack helicopters are regularly called upon to provide fire support and protective umbrella, by troops of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, South Africa, Morocco, Guatemala, Uruguay, Senegal and the Congolese Army every time an operation is launched. The militia men call it the ‘Sura Mbaya’ or the ‘Ugly Face’ in Swahili.
Till now the squadron has fired about 750 rockets in support of peacekeeping operations. It is a testimony to the squadron pilots’ professionalism that due to their accurate weapon delivery and strict abidance by the Rules Of Engagement laid down by MONUC (United Nations Mission in Congo), there has been no collateral damage or fratricide, which is a very real possibility in such operations. With such sterling performance in an international environment, the squadron is keeping the Indian and the IAF flags flying high.
